One of the world's leading authorities on digital safety education, online risk, and platform governance, Kirra bridges deep technical expertise with public policy, child rights, organisational governance, and human-centred systems design.

 

Her career began in 1991 in IT infrastructure, when the internet was still in its infancy. Over the next decade she built specialist expertise in cybersecurity, public key infrastructure (PKI), identity and access management, and digital trust frameworks, holding senior leadership roles in leading multi-national firms. There she delivered some of Australia's most significant digital identity and security initiatives — whole-of-government identity and access management programs and counter-terrorism digital reform — work sitting squarely at the intersection of national security and the systems that establish trust online.

 

In 2009 she founded the world's first consultancy dedicated exclusively to social media risk, governance, and digital reputation — at a time when most organisations still dismissed social media as a fad. After becoming the target of sustained technology-facilitated abuse and reputational attack herself, a personal response to digital harm became a global mission: safer digital environments through education, governance, evidence-based intervention, and systems reform.
 

Safe on Social is now the world's largest independent digital safety education and governance organisation, working with more than 1,200 organisations across nineteen countries. Through it, Kirra has personally delivered education, risk reviews, governance programs, and crisis support to over two million students, educators, executives, and community members — underpinned by seven proprietary frameworks she developed with no international equivalents. Building on that work, she founded Ctrl+Shft, a digital safety operating system that turns those frameworks into governance, compliance, and crisis-management infrastructure for schools and organisations worldwide.
 

A member of the Australian Government's Age Assurance Technology Trial Advisory Board, she helped shape the stakeholder processes behind Australia's world-first social media age restriction legislation, has given expert witness testimony and parliamentary contributions across multiple jurisdictions, and co-authored Digital Freedom: A Guide to Less Screen Time for Safer, Happier and Healthier Families with Maggie Dent (Macmillan Australia, August 2026).
 

A keynote speaker, expert witness, and media commentator, Kirra speaks at conferences, schools, and businesses worldwide and works with Bloomberg, CNN, BBC, ABC, The Sydney Morning Herald, 60 Minutes, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Wired, and numerous international publications.
